He should be a Ph.D, with first class or equivalent at the preceding degree in the appropriate branch with an outstanding academic record throughout and a minimum of 10 years experience as a Professor in a reputed Educational Institute. The appointment will be on contractual basis for a period of five years as per usual terms and conditions.

Six of the eight new IITs, i.e., IITs of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab, Orissa and Gujarat will commence their academic session w.e.f. 2008·09 while the IITs of Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are expected to start their sessions in 2009-10. Each new IIT will be mentored by an existing IIT.
